Program & Project Management

Program and Project management is not simply the delivery of a singular project or a group of projects under a program banner; there is much more to it

  • Scale Definition
  • Pipeline Planning
  • Delivery
  • Documentation
  • Strategic Planning

Let’s take you through these in turn.

Scale Definition

Scale Definition

Essentially Scale Definition relates to the size of the project / program in question, this includes but not limited to:-
  • Number of applications
  • Number and type of requirements
  • Technical and business maturity
  • Business readiness
  • Drafted scope
  • Volume, type and severity of Risks/Assumptions/Dependencies
  • Type of applications
  • Application Connections
    • Existing – no changes
    • Existing – some changes
    • Existing – custom coding
    • New – out of the box
    • New – custom
  • Number of markets / countries / regions
  • Will users need training and if so, who will provide?
  • Type of users (internal / external / technical proficiency)
  • How much “customization” of the core applications will be permitted (recommended as low as possible)
  • How much custom coding / development will be needed (front and back end)?
  • Will any existing integrations require changes?
  • Will additional reporting and analytics be needed?
  • Are there any data considerations such as additional security, GDPR, etc?
  • Will any regulated systems be impacted?
  • Licensing of application coverage
  • When framing the scale many assumptions will be made to help sketch the foundations of the program / project.

Delivery

Delivery

The delivery of the project or program is essentially the A-Z approach to provide the finished article as contracted to do so.

The delivery includes (the anticipated) what is being provided (scope and end solution), how (the approach), when (the timeline), by who (roles and responsibilities), why (business / client justification), the understood acceptance criteria which will be used to determine completion, and of course the cost.

Additionally, the appropriate project methodology will also need to be selected, such as Agile, PMP, Waterfall, ITIL, Lean Six Sigma, Prince2, Hybrid, etc.

Selecting the correct approach in conjunction with other requirements will help to ensure a successful and compliant delivery.

The construction of the contract will draw heavily from the proposed project / program delivery plan as the delivery plan needs to factor in many considerations across an array of different areas including both technical and non-technical; this information is then translated into summary contract appropriate terms that are more easily understood by all.

Pipeline planning

Pipeline planning

Whilst planning any project or program, awareness of commercial strategy, other projects and programs, resource / team commitments elsewhere, time of year, and understanding the impacts/risks/dependencies both likely and unlikely are critical to success. Pipeline planning helps to identify potential conflicts early, ensure appropriate steps can be taken to mitigate risks or issues, ensure direction of travel is in line with client objectives and strategy.

Documentation

Documentation

Accuracy, quality, and evidence; these are the basics of all documentation. Our bespoke documentation management index contains a comprehensive and detailed library of the entire project / program including decision capture, sign off authorization, and even details of the applicable retrospective. Our DMI solution features over 60 different documents, is provided to clients to help aid compliance and provide an unhidden directory of exactly what was done, why, when and full audit history of sign offs.

Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning

One of our unique services is to assist in planning strategies with our clients; typically these strategies relate to technology delivery or lining up new product launches when the technical infrastructure is in place, tested, and approved. It is often said that timing is everything. Whilst it isn’t everything it is extremely important and can cost businesses millions. For example, imagine trying to launch and market a streaming service before the internet was released. Exactly, the cost adversity is significant as is the damage to reputation.

Our specialists provide insightful guidance on timings of projects and programs that help our clients make those ever important decisions about what to do and when to maximise the return on the overall investment.

Win win win.

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.”
